On 30 March 2022, the European Commission published its proposal for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The Council adopted its negotiating position on 15 May 2023; the Parliament on 12 July 2023.
The co-legislators reached a provisional agreement on 04 December 2023. The ESPR will replace the current Ecodesign Directive and extend its scope to all products. It aims to regulate all lifecycle environmental impacts, not just energy performance, and would require registering some product information in a Digital Product Passport (DPP). Requirements still have to be implemented through specific delegated acts.
Final adoption by Parliament and Council and subsequent publication are expected in Q1 2024.
