Adiabatic & Hybrid Heat Rejection

Definition

Dry coolers, condensers, and CO2 gas coolers with adiabatic pre-coolers with three subcategories: pad system, simple spray, and hybrid. Before the fan draws the ambient air through the finned coil, the air is pre-cooled adiabatically when traversing a humidification pad or by water nozzles fitted below each fan.

The survey only covers units with high-density finned coils as the primary heat exchangers.

Pad system: Dry coolers or condensers with adiabatic pre-cooler pads only. Before the fan draws the ambient air through the finned coil, the air is pre-cooled adiabatically when traversing a humidification pad.  The water used to humidify the pads does not leave the pads, hence the primary heat exchanger (dry fins) will not be wetted.

Simple spray: Dry coolers or condensers with a water spraying system to wet the air intake side of the heat exchanger surface (wet fins) eventually combined with pre-cooler pads and operate the unit in an evaporative mode.

Hybrid: Dry coolers or condensers using water nozzles on top or in front of the finned coil to wet the cooling surface (wet fins) and operate the unit in an evaporative mode.

Notes:
Dry Coolers can be used to cool any liquid.
Condensers can be used to condense any refrigerant/gas.
